Aspen, Colorado, is a small Rocky Mountain town with a worldwide reputation. Long a playground for skiers, the mountain resort community was recently recognized in Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards as the No. 1 Small City in the U.S.

A booming silver mining town in the late 1800s, its population dwindled when the veins dried up. But the development of Aspen Mountain ski resort in the mid-1900s and the introduction of an internationally renowned classical music festival drew tourists, celebrities and second home buyers.

Today Aspen is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts with fine dining, high-end boutiques and cultural pursuits all close at hand. The nearby Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, with flights to Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago, is about three miles from downtown.

This ranch-like compound in Aspen overlooks Brush Creek Valley and takes in views of the Snowmass ski area, the largest of the four local resorts, and Hunter Creek, the site of a popular hiking trail.

The green-shingled main house has large expanses of windows, exposed beams and stone accents. Surrounded by mature trees, it opens to a stone viewing deck set above covered patio space. A rock-lined pond with a waterfall sits to one side of the wraparound deck.

The patio and deck combine for a total of nearly 1,500 square feet of outdoor space.

The living room has vaulted and beamed ceilings, a corner fireplace and glass doors that open to the deck. Windows on three sides bring natural light into the open-concept room, which connects to a dining area and kitchen.

The kitchen features an eat-at island and a vintage range. Arched wooden doors lead to the custom wine cellar.

A beam and metal staircase accesses the downstairs sleeping quarters. Three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms complete the main house, which was remodeled in 2017.

A detached two-level guest house was added in 2005. The wood-clad dwelling contains an art studio, kitchen facilities, a bedroom and bathrooms. Although slightly lower on the lot, the accessory dwelling unit is oriented to take in the same views as the main house.

There’s another bathroom in the detached three-car garage for a total of four bedrooms and six bathrooms within 5,251 square feet of living space. The rustic-looking garage is wood-clad with a barn-like, old West feel.

An irrigation well is located on the nearly 3-acre property.
